One characteristic which distinguished Lincoln all through his life was thoroughness. When he was President a man called on him for a certain favor, and, when asked to state his case, made a great mess of it, for he had not sufficiently prepared himself. Then the President gave him some free advice. “What you need is to be thorough,” and he brought his hand down on the table with the crash of a maul,–"to be thorough.” It was his own method.  While Lincoln was postmaster, he was a diligent reader of the newspapers, of which the chief was the Louisville Journal. It was edited by George D. Prentice, who was, and is, second to no other editor in the entire history of American journalism. The ability of this man to express his thoughts with such power was a mystery to this reader. Daniel Day-Lewis, known as a picky film actor with obsessive work habits, talks (a bit) about his process in preparing for the title role in Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln.”  Mr. Day-Lewis prepared for the part not by splitting rails or doing sums on the back of a shovel but mostly by reading. He started with Ms. Goodwin’s book, pored over Lincoln’s own writing and finished up with the Carl Sandburg biography. He also spent a lot of time studying the photographs taken toward the end of Lincoln’s life by Alexander Gardner. “I looked at them the way you sometimes look at your own reflection in a mirror and wonder who that person is looking back at you,” he said. This weekend I saw the movie Lincoln.  According to The Marquis de Chambrun, a French writer who knew Lincoln in the last months of his life, “Such a nature was admirably constituted to direct an heroic struggle on the part of a people proud enough to prefer a guide to a leader, a man commissioned to execute the popular will but, as in his case, strong enough to enforce his. own.” Humble. Lincoln scholar Waldo Braden wrote: “In the presidential role, he did not change; he continued to come across as a modest, down-to-earth, ordinary Westerner who was struggling to do the best that he could in the face of a fearsome burden. Abraham Lincoln (February 12, – April 15, ) was an American statesman and lawyer who served as the 16th President of the United States from March until his assassination in April Lincoln led the United States through the American Civil War—its bloodiest war and perhaps its greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis. In doing so, he preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy. Of the sixteen presidents whose biographies I’ve read so far, none have offered the variety of choices of Abraham Lincoln.  And because White focused so intently on the development of Lincoln’s legal and political careers he provided far less perspective on Lincoln’s family life than Burlingame.  – *Stephen Oates’s “With Malice Toward None: The Life of Abraham Lincoln” was the fourth biography of Lincoln I read.
